Shedding
Stripping away years of misinformation
In February, 2012, I decided to shave my head. As a little girls I was always taught by my grandmother and relatives that the worth of a female was in her hair; the length, elegance and beauty was her only purpose. Through the years I have coveted my hair as this tool of vanity, believing it to be an important facet in depicting who I am as a person, delegating a worth of my value in society, and as the only means to allure men.

I decided to dissolve this misguided direction of my previous generations, and choose to let my worth be described by my soul rather than a "tool" of vanity. In Shedding, I describe the freedom and independence gained by taking back control of my persona by shedding my hair, starting fresh, and letting my life direct where and how it should go.
